I am pleased to announce that we, The H.E.R.O. Foundation, have partnered with the Family Assistance Fund of the Police Benevolent Association of New York State, Inc. (PBA of NYS) to bring the 2nd annual H.E.R.O. 5k *FREE* Community Day scheduled for Saturday, June 4th, 2016 at the University at Albany campus.
Our mission is to continue to bring citizens of New York together with members of law enforcement to provide a one of a kind opportunity for them to interact on a more personal and humanizing level with the officers that serve their communities. Citizens are afforded a unique chance to take a "behind the scenes" look at some of the fun "toys" (aka helicopter, dive tank, special op’s equipment, squad cars, etc.) that each department boasts, receive educational information on various forms of safety (such as with RAD & Fatal Vision sponsored this past year by the University at Albany Police Department, and Operation Safe Child which was sponsored by Guilderland PD) and to indulge in the events brought in by hired outside vendors such as the pony rides, exotic animal shows, magicians, face painting, and much more.
The 2015 event kicked off with a 5k run and carnival with over 12 different police agencies ranging from the local to federal level; each hosting a separate event to demonstrate their skills and talents used on the job. Listed here is an example of events that took place:
Free balloons inflated and distributed by Schenectady PD.
Albany Mounted riding their horses around to greet the attendants.
Full line up of squad cars from all agencies.
Yellow Dot Safety Kits provided by the NYS Sheriff's Association.
Multiple K9 shows with K9 officers from various agencies.
Helicopter and dive tank provided by the New York State Police.
Free teddy bears donated and handed out by the NYS Troopers PBA.
Goody bags from members of the FBI.
We also contract with a host of carnival-style food vendors to serve cold drinks, desserts, fried dough, pizza, burgers and more.
With nearly 2,000 people in attendance last year, more events being added to the event schedule this year (including superheroes & carnival rides!) and an increasing number of law enforcement agencies signing on to participate, we are excited about the prospect of having a much larger turnout for our 2nd annual H.E.R.O. 5k & Family Fun Day.
